With Willup (our Bedford van) packed to the hilt, we toured the continent for three or more weeks for a cost of £35 each, camping as we travelled. Geoffrey was our main linguist and was sent up to the farmhouses to request a spot of land for the night on which we could pitch our tents. Always kind, thoughtful, gentle and polite in his manner, Geoffrey was a delight and added much to our enjoyments of a wonderful holiday.
At other times his musical talents are well remembered from those days in the sixties. I also remember a lovely occasion when I was invited to share a meal with him in his rooms in Trinity. We were served by folk from the college, and I remember with fondness and amusement our shared mistake of thinking that there was a lovely bowl of thick cream to put on our desert, only to discover it was mayonnaise! What happy memories I shall treasure of such a lovely man.
